The politics of public memory: HIV/AIDS activism in Greece

The event will be re-advertised through the <a href="https://torch.web.ox.ac.uk/#/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TORCH website </a>when is available with English subtitles* </h3>40 years after the first HIV/AIDS diagnosis, Greek activists look back at the collective history of the fight against the disease and its political, social and cultural ramificationsOn 5 June 1981, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported for the first time a rare case of pneumonia in 5 young gay men in Los Angeles. That moment signalled the official beginning of one of the most dramatic public health crises at the end of the 20th century, the HIV/AIDS epidemic.What does this date mean to us today? How does it invite us to reconsider the HIV/AIDS epidemic, its history, but also its individual stories? In a country like Greece, this has always been a difficult debate and, to a large extent, a debate that has never quite happened.How timely is the public memory of the first period of the epidemic at a global as much as at a local level? What does it mean to commemorate the victims of HIV/AIDS and to rebuild the cultural archive of trauma? How can we continue to be inspired by the activist fights against, as well as the continuing battle for equity of provision and against social exclusion? How does the conversation about AIDS connect to the contemporary moment, during another (different but also similar) pandemic? How much do global social inequalities, fear, stigma, still determine the history of HIV as a major medical and social issue? We will raise such questions in an open discussion co-organized with <a href="https://positivevoice.gr/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Positive Voice</a> (“Thetiki Foni” - the Union of People Living with HIV in Greece) and supported by TORCH and the collective <a href="https://gc.fairead.net/main" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Greek Studies Now</a>. Our aim is to talk about the transnational, but also the local experience of HIV/AIDS, an experience that has arguably remained disavowed, especially when it comes to the public memory of people and communities targeted by HIV/AIDS. Our aim is to recollect, but also to demand, public memory: looking back at these last four decades while being propelled into the future.Participants in this open discussion include activists and members of the communities that became active early on in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Greece, and include: Gregory Vallianatos, Daisy Galiatsatou, Panagiotis Damaskos, Panagiotis Evangelidis, Maria Katsikadakou (Cyber), Andreas Mazarakis.The discussion will be in Greek – but the video recording will eventually become available with English subtitles.This event is part of a larger initiative to reignite the public debate on HIV/AIDS in Greece and its memory, supported by the TORCH Knowledge Exchange Fellowship, <a href="https://torch.ox.ac.uk/article/hiv/aids-in-greece-a-political-archive" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">HIV/AIDS in Greece: A Political Archive</a>.Register here and you will be emailed a link to join the YouTube live stream where you will be able to submit questions and comments to the panellists --<h2>40 χρόνια HIV/AIDS: Διεκδικώντας τη δημόσια μνήμη</h2>Δευτέρα 7 Ιουνίου 2021, 17.00 (ώρα Αγγλίας), 19.00 (ώρα Ελλάδας)Μια συζήτηση για την ιστορία και την πορεία του κινήματος για το HIV/AIDS στην ΕλλάδαΣτις 5 Ιουνίου 1981 ανακοινώνεται για πρώτη φορά μία σπάνια πνευμονία σε πέντε νέους gay άντρες στο Λος Άντζελες. Ξεκινούσε εκείνη τη στιγμή έτσι και επισήμως μια από τις πιο δραματικές κρίσεις δημόσιας υγείας του τέλους του εικοστού αιώνα, της επιδημίας του HIV/AIDS.Τι σηματοδοτεί για μας σήμερα αυτή η ημερομηνία; Πόσο μας καλεί να ξανασκεφτούμε την επιδημία του HIV/AIDS, την ιστορία της αλλά και τις ατομικές ιστορίες της; Σε μια χώρα όπως η Ελλάδα, αυτή είναι πάντα μια δύσκολη συζήτηση και, σε μεγάλο βαθμό, μια συζήτηση που δεν έχει γίνει αρκετά.Πόσο αναγκαία είναι σήμερα η δημόσια μνήμη της πρώτης περιόδου της επιδημίας του HIV/AIDS σε παγκόσμιο αλλά και σε τοπικό επίπεδο; Γιατί είναι σημαντικό να ξαναθυμηθούμε τα θύματα του HIV/AIDS και να ανασυστήσουμε το πολιτισμικό αρχείο του τραύματος; Πώς μπορούμε να εμπνευστούμε από τις κατακτήσεις ενός κοινοτικού και ακτιβιστικού αγώνα για τη στήριξη της επιστημονικής έρευνας και την καταπολέμησή του κοινωνικού αποκλεισμού; Πώς συνδέεται ο διάλογος για το AIDS με τη σημερινή συγκυρία, τη στιγμή μιας άλλης (διαφορετικής μα και με παρόμοια στοιχεία) πανδημίας; Πόσο σημαντικό είναι να συνεχίσουμε να μιλάμε για την κοινωνική ανισότητα, τη φοβία, το στίγμα και τον αποκλεισμό, όλων αυτών των κοινωνικών προσδιοριστών που συντηρούν και τον HIV ως ένα μείζον ιατρικό και κοινωνικό θέμα;Τα ερωτήματα αυτά θα θέσουμε σε μια ανοιχτή συζήτηση που διοργανώνεται σε συνεργασία με τον <a href="https://positivevoice.gr/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Σύλλογο Οροθετικών Ελλάδας Θετική Φωνή</a>, και με την υποστήριξη του ερευνητικού κέντρου TORCH του πανεπιστημίου της Οξφόρδης και της ομάδας <a href="https://gc.fairead.net/main" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Greek Studies Now</a>. Στόχος είναι να μιλήσουμε για τη διεθνή, αλλά και την ελληνική εμπειρία του HIV/AIDS, μια εμπειρία που, όπως έχει υποστηριχθεί, στην Ελλάδα έχει μείνει σε μεγάλο βαθμό χωρίς δημόσια καταγραφή, ιδίως από την πλευρά των ασθενών και των κοινοτήτων που βρέθηκαν στο στόχαστρο εκείνης της επιδημίας. Στόχος είναι να θυμηθούμε αλλά και να διεκδικήσουμε τη δημόσια μνήμη, με το μυαλό στα σαράντα αυτά πυκνά χρόνια, αλλά και το βλέμμα στο σήμερα και το αύριο.Στην ανοιχτή αυτή συζήτηση θα παρέμβουν ακτιβιστές/ίστριες και μέλη των κοινοτήτων που δραστηριοποιήθηκαν στον αγώνα ενάντια στο HIV/AIDS στην Ελλάδα μαζί με ένα ευρύ δίκτυο συνομιλητών/τριών.Συμμετέχουν μεταξύ άλλων οι:Γρηγόρης Βαλλιανάτος, Νταίζη Γαλιατσάτου, Παναγιώτης Δαμάσκος, Παναγιώτης Ευαγγελίδης, Μαρία Κατσικαδάκου (Cyber), Ανδρέας Μαζαράκης.Η συζήτηση γίνεται στο πλαίσιο μιας ευρύτερης κίνησης για την εκ νέου καταγραφή και δημόσια παρουσία της κοινωνικής και πολιτισμικής ιστορίας του HIV/AIDS στην Ελλάδα, με πρωτοβουλία της Θετικής Φωνής και του προγράμματος του ερευνητικού κέντρου TORCH <a href="https://torch.ox.ac.uk/article/hiv/aids-in-greece-a-political-archive" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">HIV/AIDS: ένα πολιτικό αρχείο</a>.
