Learning Outcomes:
This 2 day course aims to equip participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of systematic reviews and systematic maps. Core learning objectives include:
- Understanding the distinction between systematic methods and traditional reviews, and when to use systematic reviews vs. maps.
- Gaining familiarity with coordinating bodies, methodological standards, and review protocols.
- Developing skills in stakeholder engagement, question formulation, and protocol development.
- Learning to construct effective search strategies, manage databases, and use review software (e.g. Rayyan).
- Practising screening procedures, data extraction, coding, and critical appraisal techniques.
- Exploring synthesis approaches (narrative, quantitative, qualitative) and methods for visualising and reporting findings.
- Learning best practices for writing, publishing, and effectively communicating systematic review results to various audiences.
The course combines theoretical foundations with hands-on exercises to build practical, transferable skills in evidence synthesis.
Expected background knowledge:
Understanding of how scientific research is conducted and published, experience of using bibliographic databases and searching for academic information.
