About this event
Part of Theatreship's guest nights - where contemporary artists take over the ship to highlight the stories they want to tell.
In this edition, the Hong Kong Film Festival UK takes to our stage for a screening and participatory workshop.
Here's some more info from the organisers:
Martial Angels is the 5th Edition of the screening series Fatal & Fallen, an ever-evolving programme that unearths the trope of the deadly, deranged and delinquent woman pictured in grindhouse, exploitation, and arthouse cinema. Fatal & Fallen consists of the genres Hong Kong’s Girls with Guns, Japan’s Pinku Eiga, South Korean hostess and thriller films and Taiwan’s Black Movies, investigating the enduring yet contested motif of revenge across cinema, popular media, collective narratives, and contemporary imaginaries.
This edition zooms in on the Hong Kong Girls with Guns genre, comprising female-led action movies and anime that emerged from the 1980s to 2000s. The screening presents a 1993 classic, The Heroic Trio, directed by Johnnie To, featuring the lethal woman unholy trinity, Anita Mui, Michelle Yeoh and Maggie Cheung. The film is accompanied by a participatory worldbuilding workshop inspired by Girls with Guns, in collaboration with lecturer and technical artist Jenn Leung, as a collective exploration of final girlhood, revenge, rage, and agency.
