One-day Rigging Practitioner

Scottish Mountain Rescue (SMR) represents25 Mountain Rescue Teams(MRTs) made up of highly trained volunteers who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to emergencies and carry out a specialist search and rescue service in the mountains and remote communities in Scotland to keep people safe and help people if and when they get into difficulty.

Course attendees will need to be responsible for their own health and that of others. They need to attend the course free of any Covid-19 symptoms. All attendees must adhere to Scottish Government guidelines and travel restrictions in place at the time of the training course.In addition, you need to have spoken to your team&#x27;s Training Officer and have read the SMR Training Course Policy document and Risk Assessment, before registering for this course. We can only accept a maximum of 2 attendees per team initially.These documents can be found by clicking <a href="https://www.scottishmountainrescue.org/team-pages/training/training-policy-risk-assessment/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a> (password hillsandcaves55**)This one-day course is aimed at team members who have received crag technical training from their team and wish to improve and consolidate best practice in modern rigging systems, which include; single rope and mirrored rope rigs, and a variety of anchor systems including ground anchors/stakes.An emphasis is placed on knowledge of equipment strength and the skill of engineering rigging systems to maximise strengths for single and multiple rescue loads. The course will also cover a variety of belay equipment and the principles of self-arrest and non-self-arrest rope capture systems.The course will re-fresh, up-date and improve participants&#x27; practical technical rigging knowledge and skills in the field.The course will comprise of two parts:<ul><li>Pre-course Zoom meeting on Thursday, 9 September @ 19:30hrs which is compulsory to attend</li><li>Hill-based training on Saturday, 11 September 2021 at Glen Coe (meeting point tbc)</li></ul>Opportunities are programmed for participants to share their home team experience and rigging practices.By the end of the the course you will be able to:<ol><li>Rig and operate a technical rescue system</li><li>Rig and understand the rigging principles for a lower, rig for a raise and convert both systems using single, twin and double rope systems.</li><li>Be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of a broad range of rigging systems used in technical rigging for rescue.</li></ol>This course is not suitable for team members stepping into a harness or on to a crag for the first time.Should the Saturday course fill, we will put on an additional course on the Sunday, 12 September.  Therefore, if the course appears to be full on Eventbrite, please register for the event so that you are on the waitlist.  We will then be in touch with you when we have sufficient numbers to run a 2nd course.

<h1>What to bring</h1>For your comfort and safety please ensure you have appropriate personal safety equipment for this course.In particular, participants  must bring :  Midge net, midge spray, harness, helmet , team radio + spare battery, personal MR and crag rescue kit.In addition, you will need to bring a face mask, hand sanitiser, first aid kit and personal medications, as well as a pen/notepad.As this is a one day, non-residential course, you will need to remember to bring your packed lunch, drinks and snacks to keep you going for the day.Participants are encouraged to bring technical rescue equipment as used by their own team. In addition we would encourage participants to bring along copies of any team rigging guidelines so that we can start to share this type of information.
