This event explores deeper ramifications of the AfCFTA, including the key articles, prospects, challenges, and boosting productivity.

We enjoin you to display ticket copies to admit you to the Zoom session for the event

KEY QUESTIONS1. What are the key articles in AfCFTA and what do they portend for signatory countries?2. Baking the AfCFTA cake: How best can African scholars and professionals use research in different disciplines to produce AfCFTA-relevant finished goods and services in different industry sectors? The first question explores the key articles in AfCFTA in light of related pacts in Africa (African Union, NEPAD, ECOWAS, say), also the prospects and challenges they imply for the member countries. The second question revisits the perennial problem of African higher educational curricula not having visible impact in the creation of products and services in different industry sectors, offerings the free movement of which the AfCFTA aims to facilitate. These sectors include education itself, agriculture, manufacturing, banking and financial services, consumer goods, engineering, health, leisure, media, professional and support services, ICT, telecoms, and transport. In the creative industry for example, success stories include Nollywood and Gallywood which move films across borders in Africa, engendering collaborations among artists from Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroun, for example. However, there are far more failures than successes in other industry sectors. In health, Africa could not come up with a good coronavirus vaccine and mainly have to rely on vaccine donations from developed countries. Prior to that some African citizens embark on health tourism to India and UK, for instance. In education, African academics seem to prefer foreign journals, considering impact factors that do not seem to translate to real-world impact overall. This is not to talk of producing graduates that lack adequate skills to compete in the world of work with students in developed countries. Hence, the need to deeply interrogate these failings and reconceptualise African higher education and research.WHY IS THIS WORKSHOP UNIQUE?To the best knowledge of the facilitators, having followed a flurry of workshops on AfCFTA which seem to continue usual talk-talk around continental agenda, this is the first time the initiative is critically explored from these perspectives, aiming to mobilise home and diaspora capacities in retooling African higher education to impact the socio-economic development of the continent, across academia, industry, government, and wider society (the Quadruple Helix).PARTICIPANTSAcademics, students, professionals, and policy makersKEY BENEFITSa.
