Professor Patrick Oseloka EZEPUE

Four key forces and seven channels through which academics become hyper-productive across academia, industry, and government are explored.

This workshop demonstrates how modern corporate academics drive a sevenfold career wheel which creates profound value for key stakeholders - students, affiliated higher educational institutions, academic colleagues and industry players, client services, government and public services, global partners and organisations, and professional bodies. The workshop particularly explores Four Forces that support this novel approach to high-impact academic work, namely: 1) a Corporate Academic Research and Enterprise Development (CARED) philosophy, by which academics walk the talk of their disciplinary expertise in creating research-driven offerings that satisfy unmet needs in society; 2) all-round excellence not only in fundamental research, but also integration of knowledge across disciplines, applications, and teaching (listed last to emphasise teaching across all four spheres); 3) immersion in skills for students, graduates, and start-ups (SSGS), which enhance student learning experience, entrepreneurial mindset, and employability; and 4) ability to use digital economy business models, tools and techniques to innovate their research, teaching, learning, assessments, consulting, community services. In ways not previously explored in traditional academe, the workshop explicates the mechanisms by which corporate academics engage in boundary-crossing work in these areas, across academia, industry, government, and wider society (the Quadruple Helix).WHY THE WORKSHOP IS FUNDAMENTAL TO ACCELERATING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIESIt is important in the current contexts of education in Nigeria, Africa, and developing countries of the Global South, to innovate the curricula through the above four key forces and across the Quadruple Helix of academia, industry, government, and wider society. A curriculum that relentlessly innovates the four spheres of the four scholarships (research, IoK, applications, and teaching (RIAT), in tandem with deep Skills for Students, Graduates, and Start-Ups, and supports a world-class CARED incubator, which capacitates academics, graduates, and professionals to spin off related firms from advanced research across the Quadruple Helix, is a sine qua non in these climes. Even if bits of these are happening in different departments in higher educational institutions, academics have not mastered how to deploy the four forces as of habit. Hence, their overall impact in the Quadruple Helix is minimal despite the emphasis in publishing in high-impact journals for promotion to senior positions. Hence, almost Sub-Sahara African countries are still underdeveloped several decades after independence. Thus, a new model of education that mainstreams these forces theoretically and practically, as a lingua franca for knowledge production in developing countries, is a royal road to success in ameliorating the debilitating socio-economic development and problematic future of work in these climes. The current state of dysfunctional education in developing countries is because of their inability to reorient their education, such that lecturers operate more like their ilk in Google-Microsoft-Space X-Amazon-Facebook corporate universities, albeit with suitable modifications that retain the core essences of curiosity-driven research. That is, to produce global corporate academics and research-driven professionals who ask hard questions about using their knowledge to expand the frontiers of their fields, theoretically, practically (through enterprise development, say), and contextually, through continual innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. This workshop explores these affordances in-depth.KEY QUESTIONS1.	What are the Sevenfold Ways in high-impact academic work and how can academics navigate these ways? 2.	What are the Four Forces in high-impact academic work and what core competences do they entail? 3.	How can academics best impact the constituents of the Helix, whilst maintaining their intellectual identities?4.	Bringing it all together, how can the priorities of academia and the professoriate in Nigeria and Africa be reconsidered, to enable African countries to become developed? KEY BENEFITSa.
