Interpreting and Applying International Law in Domestic Courts

Our Fall Lecture Series of 2021, 'Exploring the Ecosystem of International Law', builds upon the introduction given on internationalism and international law by the concluded Spring Lecture Series, titled‘Future of Internationalism and International Law’. The Fall Series endeavours to study the different contours of international law. To assist in this study, the speakers will cover and address their respective areas of expertise, based upon their years of research and practice. Given the vast ecosystem and the engagement of international law in it, the Society aims to study the fragmentation and fertilisation of the various disciplines in this ecosystem.The lowest common denominator in this Fall Lecture Series is to enhance and provide a deeper understanding of international law through international lawyers. The Society, for its Members, is a well of knowledge and a quorum of thought provoking discussions, which will be resultant of this engagement with experts aimed at exploring the ecosystem of international law.

<h3>The Jindal Society of International Law and the Centre for Study of United Nations at Jindal Global Law School, are delighted to present and hold the Fall Lecture Series of 2021, titled, <em>'Exploring the Ecosystem of International Law'</em>.  The lecture on <em>'Interaction Between Domestic and International Law and Lawyers: Interpreting and Applying International Law in Domestic Courts'</em> is the third lecture in this twenty-three part lecture series, which is being held from August to November 2021.</h3><p>Our Fall Lecture Series of 2021, '<em>Exploring the Ecosystem of International Law'</em>, builds upon the introduction given on internationalism and international law by the concluded Spring Lecture Series, titled <em>‘Future of Internationalism and International Law’</em>. <h3>The third lecture of our Fall 2021 Lecture Series, <em>&#x27;Exploring the Ecosystem of International Law&#x27;</em>, is on the topic <em>&#x27;Interaction Between Domestic and International Law and Lawyers: Interpreting and Applying International Law in Domestic Courts&#x27;</em>. The guest of honour for this lecture is Ms. Zena Sorabjee and the distinguished speaker for this lecture is Mr. Gopal Subramanium.</h3><p>Zena Sorabjee is the wife of Late Mr. Soli Sorabjee and is the Founder of Brilliant Stars, a non-profit school in the State of Tripura. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Barli Development Institute for Rural Women in Madhya Pradesh. This institute conducts programmes on literacy, public health and vocational education for rural and tribal women.</p><p>Gopal Subramanium is a Senior Advocate who practises at the Supreme Court of India, former Solicitor General of India, and a noted scholar on legal philosophy, constitutional law and human rights theory. Having trained under former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee, Mr. Subramanium was designated a Senior Advocate (the equivalent of a QC in the UK) by the Supreme Court in 1993, where he developed a reputation for his rigorous style. He has acted in numerous cases that have shaped legislative principles on privacy, human rights and freedom of speech internationally. He successfully defended the conviction of the sole surviving terrorist of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks; acted for petitioners in a historic case that held there is a fundamental constitutional right to privacy in India; and, in 2013, served on the JS Verma Commission, which recommended amendments to Indian laws to safeguard the safety and dignity of women and children. </p><p>Having built a name as a leading international commercial arbitrator, in 2013, Mr. Subramanium set up a UK office and was appointed an Associate Member at 3 Verulam Buildings. In 2015, he was appointed a Supplementary Judge at the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Tribunal. In 2020, he became the first Indian Senior Advocate to appear before the Singapore Court of Appeal. </p><p>Outside of law, Mr. Subramanium is noted for his work within legal philosophy, writing on democracy, social inequality, civic education and the applicability of psychology to legal concepts. In 2019, he was elected to the Foundation Fellowship at Somerville College, University of Oxford, and he is a Visiting Professor at the University of New Delhi and an Honorary Adjunct Professor at Jindal Global Law School. A Classical Music Patron at Southbank Centre, he is an Ambassador of the mental health charity SANE, a Fellow of the RSA, and the Honorary Director of the All India Heart Foundation, the leading cardiac charity. In 2021, he was called to the Bar of England and Wales at Gray&#x27;s Inn. </p><h3></h3>
