I have lived in Islington, North London simce 1988 and have been facscinated by the area's history. The unusual details on, above and along London's streets impelled me to start a blog www.janeslondon.com and this, in turn, evolved into the touring arm of www.janeslondonwalks.comThere is, as they say, so much out there hiding in plain sight.

From Egyptian revival to Victorian Gothic via Art Deco, Modernist, Arts & Crafts and Queen Anne, whether factories, pubs, offices or shopping streets, many of my walks feature cleverly-designed buildings and the architects and designers behind them.

London boasts a variety of  impressive Jazz Age and 1930's  buildings, many of which are often overlooked or under-appreciated. Let me share them with you.

Islington

This collection shows the diversity of tours in the London Borough of Islington – old signage, Victorian streets, social housing, canals, shopping, literature and more

On this guided walk, lasting just under two hours, we'll look at some marvellous 'statement' architecture constructed in the interwar years during a design period that decades later came to be identified as 'Art Deco'.The modernist architecture of the Jazz Age era with its clean geometric lines, simplicity, functionality and minimal decorative enhancement was designed to impress and inspire – a kind of "understated showing-off" pointing to a positive bright future – a complete change from the fussiness and over-embellishments of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.Since the 1870s Holloway became north London's main shopping area, and this continued into the 1920s and 1930s with many businesses updating or rebuilding in the new Moderne style using the innovative products and processes of that time.
