Exploring the Impact of Air Pollution on Pregnancy and Early Life

Air pollution poses serious risks during pregnancy and early childhood, with growing evidence linking it to a range of adverse health and developmental outcomes. Air Pollution exposures during pregnancy are linked to low birth weight, preterm birth, stillbirth and miscarriage, autism and neurodevelopmental disorders, and asthma and respiratory health. Pollution nanoparticles can penetrate the placenta, and beyond to the fetus. These particles may alter gene and protein expression in both placental and fetal cells, potentially affecting organ development and long-term health.Effects from exposures in childhood include those on the brain, respiratory health, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and the immune system and growth. Children are particularly vulnerable because their organs are still developing, they breathe more rapidly, and they are generally closer to ground-level pollutants. The cumulative effects of pollution can also exacerbate social and economic inequalities, leading to poorer educational outcomes and lifelong health challenges.We have gathered an array of speakers who work across air pollution, pregnancy and child health alongside policy and decision makers within RCP, RCPCH, and RCOG to lead this event.
