We will be talking about mental health within the Black community with Clinical Psychologist Dr Marvin Iroegbu in this online session

<h2>Dr Marvin Iroegbu - Clinical Psychologist</h2>Dr Marvin Iroegbu is a Clinical Psychologist who has worked with people from diverse backgrounds with a range of psychological difficulties. He provides consultation to probation services in how to work with offenders with trauma and severe and enduring mental health difficulties. He also completes extensive psychology assessments to assist Personality Disordered offenders to help create bespoke treatment plans. Dr Marvin Iroegbu has a person-centred approach which focuses not just on the individual, but the challenges of social inequality and he uses this understanding of social inequality to help people to make sense of complex difficulties. He also delivers bespoke training packages to staff teams to help them to understand the impact of racial trauma, harassment and mental health difficulties in the work place, and helps staff to create more enabling environments in their place of work. <h2>Faris Khalifa - Writer</h2>Faris came to the UK as an asylum seeker when he was just 15 years old, after losing both of his parents in the Sudanese conflict.Faris struggled with the move and became increasingly withdrawn, couldn’t eat and experienced night terrors. He was soon referred to a children’s psychiatrist who diagnosed him with depression, anxiety and PTSD.It took Faris a long time before he felt able to open up and it wasn’t until he was in his twenties that he told his friends about his mental health problems. Faris explains that as he grew older, his understanding of what it means to be black and proud grew too but also felt the impact on his mental health with reminders of that "no matter what you do or who you are, sometimes people don't see you as an equal just based on your race".Faris has seen an upswing in how he feels at the moment due to some changes that have made him feel less isolated and abandoned."A lot more work needs to be done in black communities to destigmatise mental health. I was speaking to a taxi driver recently and he told me there’s not even words for depression or anxiety in Somalia. Mental health is shamed in some cultures. Families just hide it away and they don’t talk about it. "

<h2>Chañtelle Lunt - Activist and more
</h2>Chantelle Lunt is a writer, public speaker, educator entrepreneur, and activist. She has a professional background in Public Services, including her work in policing and children’s social care. Chantelle owns a mobile Juice and smoothie bar ‘The Little Green Juice Box’ and writes for independent publications and blogs. Chantelle is an advocate of racial equality, having experienced racism throughout her life, particularly during her service as a Police Officer. She is the founder of Merseyside BLM Alliance - one of the most proactive anti-racist groups in Merseyside. Chantelle is also the chair of Merseyside Alliance for Racial Equality CIC, a non-profit organization committed to ensuring that people are not racially discriminated against and have their needs responded to at a community level. Additionally, Chantelle is a freelance educator, working for organisations, such as the Black Curriculum, to decolonize the curriculum and empower young people by engaging them in the study of black history.
