Every year in the UK, more than 450,000 people die. Over the last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the numbers increased to over 600,000. For each of these deaths, there is a ripple effect of grief and loss. Beyond the Mask (60 mins) is a thought-provoking documentary that examines the lived experience of grief during the pandemic and we have brought together the film’s producers Jane Harris and Jimmy Edmonds, two of the films contributors, Lucy Selman from the University of Bristol and the Good Grief Festival author and palliative care physician Kathryn Mannix, and Amber Jeffrey who runs the Grief Gang, for a screening of the film.This will be followed by a conversation about how we can support each other through the mainstay of support, kindness and compassion, which comes from the people we are close to and the communities in which we live. Often, these sources of support are underplayed, under recognised and as a consequence, many suffer in silence. Death and loss affects us all and how we support each other in times of grief makes all the difference. Rather than making assumptions that the support is always there, we can do much more to help each other in times of need. The first is to have conversations about how we can support each other, and the second is to raise awareness of the many amazing sources of support already out there. Everyone needs the help of others multiple times during the life course. We can all make a huge difference through sensitivity, kindness and listening.
