Voices from the Amazon - An Online Exhibition

An online exhibition that gives voice to Indigenous peoples in the Amazon as they fight against extractivism and defend their way of life.

During the Covid-19 pandemic the already precarious situation of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon region deteriorated rapidly. As attention focused on fighting the virus, logging and other extractivism practices increased - with disastrous effects on the people and the ecosystems of the Amazon.This online exhibition showcases the experiences and responses of Indigenous groups in the Amazon, both their survival strategies and their struggle against the destruction of their environment. The Other Pandemics (Las Otras Pandemias) – Through the voices of Amazonian activists in Ecuador we hear how extractivism is impacting the environment and how communities are responding in a series of 4 short films - Flood, Mining, Logging, and Spill. Indigenous peoples tell their stories in the hope that their reflections will generate empathy and interest in the struggle they face.Here! (¡Aquí!) – In Peru the peoples of the Amazon have suffered not just from Covid-19 but also from a history of oppression, the negligence of governments, and a society that still doesn’t take them seriously as citizens with rights and their own voice. A collection of paintings by Indigenous artists, activists and cultural leaders evidences their presence, and their right to defend their way of life and to return to their lands and forests.Both projects were funded through the <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/arctivism" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arctivism</a> project at the Centre for Applied Human Rights, University of York. Throughout 2020 the Centre supported collaborations of activists and artists across the world responding to the outbreak of Covid-19 and its implications for human rights defenders, activism, and shrinking civic and political space. Through film, music, spoken word poetry, story-telling, zines, theatre, drag performance, murals, painting and sculpture 26 projects from 21 countries countered restrictions to civic and public space, limitations to rights and freedoms, and the stifling of dissent.Please register your interest and we will send you a link once the exhibition is live.Any queries can be sent to hrdhub@york.ac.uk
