How do we write poems about things that are inherently unpoetic? This workshop looks at poems that are ugly, boundary-pushing, uncomfortable

ZOOM, OPEN ALL SQUADS This workshop looks at the thematic boundaries of poetry – the gnarly, uncomfortable edges – and asks how we can write about things that are inherently unpoetic. There’s a tension between being gratuitously unpleasant vs. making good art that says the unsaid. We’re going to think about where that line is and how we can navigate it. C. A. Conrad said ‘yes, poetry can handle this’; Rita Ann Higgins said ‘a poem does not have to be nice’; Tony Hoagland said ‘I think poems can be too careful. A poem is not a teddy bear.’ With these sentiments at its core, this workshop will help poets push through their discomfort to write something new. --Jenny Danes grew up in Essex and studied at Newcastle University. Her work has appeared in magazines including The Rialto, Magma, The North, The Interpreter’s House and Butcher’s Dog. In 2016 she won The Poetry Business New Poets Prize and her debut pamphlet Gaps was published by smith|doorstop in 2017. She enjoys pushing the discomfort button in her writing and is currently working on a series of poems about menstrual cups.
