The Society for Medieval Archaeology’s Annual Student Colloquium 2021 will be held at The University of Hull, 11th – 13th November 2021.

Society for Medieval Archaeology Annual Student Colloquium 2021 - Programme ScheduleThe world continues to alter and the medieval period similarly saw a great deal of change and innovation. With this in mind, the colloquium this year will take a blended approach to allow researchers to network and celebrate their recent findings in a friendly and supportive environment. We will be hosting the event at the University of Hull but there will also be an opportunity to get involved in an online session as well.We are inviting papers from students and early career researchers to discuss their work in all areas of medieval studies ranging from the 5th to the 16th century A.D.Submissions have now closed. Thursday 11th November: Virtual Content of Medieval SitesVideo content will be sent directly to all attendees and will showcase some of the medieval sites in the local area.Friday 12th November: Student and Early Career Researcher Presentations Hosted by The University of Hull - Wilberforce Lecture Theatre 3109:30	Arrival / Refreshments10:00	Welcome 10:15 	Lisa Fenucci (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)Archaeology of heterosexuality in the Late Middle Ages. A study of late Medieval &#x27;heterosexuality&#x27; in the Low Countries through the lens of the sexual badges.10:45	Katerina Kiltzanidou (Democritus University of Thrace Komotini)Some examples of female donation in churches of the late Byzantine period in the region of Peloponnese.11:15	Michele Abballe (Ghent University and the University of Verona)A geoarchaeological approach to investigate reclamation process in the Middle Ages in the lowlands around Ravenna (Italy).11:45	Elizabeth Legge (University of Pisa)Ambrosius Aurelianus, Aetius and Early Post-Roman Britain.12:15	Lunch and refreshments There will also be an opportunity to view the display boards created by Oxford Archaeology showing the excavation work undertaken on the A63 Castle Street Project in the city.13:00	Guest Speaker – Professor Barbara English 	Barbara English will provide a talk drawing on her experience in academia and other research activities in Hull and the wider region.14:00	Jonathan Farley (University of Hull)Child Sacrifice during the Hundred Years War: A Case Study on “Medieval” Peru.14:30	Ellie March (University of Exeter)Evolution of religious space, practice and identity: An interdisciplinary study of the medieval monastic church in Tewkesbury from its Norman foundation until the Dissolution.15:00	Jack Cranfield (University of Exeter)Horseshoes, Pots and Whetstones: An interdisciplinary study of a medieval industrial settlement and its landscape.15:30	Adam Cook (University of Hull)From Normans to Northerners: identity in the Honour of Pontefract from the Norman Conquest to Magna Carta.16:00	Stephen Lonsdale (University of York)Sites of prestige, power, piety: The Medieval moated sites of eastern Yorkshire.16:30	Ryan Prescott (University of Hull)Land and Lordship: Lincolnshire and Yorkshire during the Reign of King Stephen, c. 1135 – 1154.17:00	Closing remarks Saturday 13th November: Fieldtrip (Provisional Itinerary)10:30	Trip to Hull and East Riding Museum Showcasing the history of the local area, the museum has just unveiled its new medieval gallery. Situated in the historic Old Town, the outline of the original street pattern can be seen adjacent to the River Hull.12:15	Visit to Trinity Market for Lunch Records show that a market has existed nearby since at least 1469. Becoming increasingly popular throughout the centuries, there are now a variety of stalls with food and drink from a range of cultures. You will be spoiled for choice!13:00	Tour with the Director of Music at Hull MinsterMark Keith will discuss some of the recent archaeological findings in Hull Minster within the context of Edward I, as Hull looks to develop its future by acknowledging its past.13:45	Optional Tower Tour at Hull Minster / Free time in the Minster, Old Town and Fruit MarketAfter climbing 180 steps, take in panoramic views of the city and the Humber, Wolds and historic Beverley.(May not be suitable with for those with any underlying health conditions) 15:00	Drinks / Departure 16:15	Optional early evening meal at the Lion and Key in Old TownThe meeting place, directions and other information regarding the trip will be sent after registration closes on 31st October.Registration:If you are already a member then please select the member ticket option.
