Prof Colva Roney-Dougal, Professor of Pure Maths at St Andrews, will give our Autumn Popular Lecture, suitable for Y11 & up.

About the lecture:How many guests need to come to a party to guarantee that either at least five of them all know each other or at least five are mutual strangers? This question turns out to be surprisingly hard to solve, and has led to the creation of some maths that feels more like a newspaper puzzle than real work. We&#x27;ll explore connections ranging from friendship, through marriage, to the spread of infectious diseases.***This lecture will be delivered via Zoom. Please request one ticket per Zoom connection. The joining link will be emailed to registered attendees on the day of the lecture.***About the speaker:Colva is Professor of Pure Mathematics and Director of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Computational Algebra at the University of St Andrews. As well as her teaching and her research, Colva has a keen interest in outreach, with appearances on Radio 4 and articles for Plus Magazine among her contributions.
