Art, Activism & the Politics of Hope

Academics, artists & activists will discuss the politics of hope and how hope has emerged as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Throughout 2020 the <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/arctivism" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arctivism</a> project from the Human Rights Defender Hub at the University of York supported collaborations of activists and artists across the world responding to the outbreak of Covid-19 and its implications for human rights defenders, activism, and shrinking civic and political space. Through film, music, spoken word poetry, story-telling, zines, theatre, drag performance, murals, painting and sculpture 26 projects from 21 countries countered restrictions to civic and public space, limitations to rights and freedoms, and the stifling of dissent.In the second in a series of Arctivism Conversations artists and activists will discuss the politics of hope and how hope has emerged as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Panellists will also consider how hope can challenge structural inequalities and counter the current politics of anger, fear and hatred, as well as the role art can play in the politics of hope. The webinar will be chaired by Dr Indrajit Roy from the University of York who is currently researching <a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/politics/research/current-projects/citizenship-futures/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Citizenship Futures – The Politics of Hope</a> – a project which reflects on the ways in which hopes for the future remain central to the political imaginations of socially excluded people. Joining him are Nida Ansari and Pooja Dhingra whose project <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/compassion-contagion" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Compassion Contagion</a> documented the rise of active citizens in India who responded to the pandemic with everyday acts of resilience and compassion. Pooja is also now working on the project <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/manifesto-for-the-future" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Manifesto for the Future</a> which shines a light on people’s shared struggles and resilience. and the power of collectivisation that is showing us new possibilities for rebuilding our broken world. They are joined by writer and film-maker Natasha Badhwar who leads the media team at <a href="https://karwanemohabbat.in/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Karwan e Mohabbat</a> – a people’s campaign devoted to equality, freedom, justice and compassion – that makes films that reflect the values of solidarity, inter-faith harmony and the need to heal our fractured society.More information on the panellists:<a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/politics/people/academicstaff/indrajit-roy/#profile-content" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Indrajit Roy</a> is a senior lecturer in Global Development Politics at the University of York. His main research interest is the politics of ‘new development futures’ where development is understood broadly as an ensemble of practices, processes and possibilities that encompass economic change and social transformation.<a href="https://mobile.twitter.com/nida_razia?lang=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Nida Ansari</a> is a development consultant, youth worker and writer. She has worked closely with people’s movements at the intersection of the rights of workers, students and farmers and was recently involved in the nation-wide community led protests against the National Register of Citizens and the Constitutional Amendment. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/natashabadhwar/?hl=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Natasha Badhwar</a> is a former broadcast journalist now working as an independent film-maker, photographer and writer. Natasha leads the media team at Karwan e Mohabbat, a people’s campaign for justice, rights and inter-faith harmony. She is the author of the books, My Daughters’ Mum and Immortal For A Moment. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pooja.dhingra.3956" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Pooja Dhingra</a> is an independent conceptualiser, graphic designer and an art director. She has worked on projects that address the issues of discrimination and social exclusion, campaigns designed to address early and child marriage, women’s nutrition, health and reproductive right of adolescent girls. Her work uses research and illustrations to communicate and simplify information. Her personal work revolves around waste management, sustainability, and addressing the patriarchy through humour and satire.
