Artists & activists will discuss Indigenous responses to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing  impacts of extractivism in the Amazon.

In this webinar artists and activists from Peru and Ecuador will discuss how Indigenous peoples have responded to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing impacts of extractivism in the Amazon. The panel will consider how art can be a strategy for resisting extractivism and a way of raising awareness of the devastation caused by mega-projects. This webinar is the third in a series of <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/arctivism-conversations" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arctivism Conversations</a> and will be chaired by Dr Piergiuseppe Parisi from the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York. Joining him are Sofía Acosta and Anais Córdova who collaborated on the project <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/the-other-pandemics" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Las Otras Pandemias</a> (The Other Pandemics) in which the voices of five Amazonian activists portrayed the struggle they face in their territories and reflected on community organisation and the ecosystem they inhabit. They are joined by Uitoto artist and activist Rember Yahuarcani whose project <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/here" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Here!</a> used paintings and an exhibition to document how Covid-19 impacted the life of Peru’s Amazonian communities, the governmental response, and Indigenous strategies for survival.Please note: This event will be in Spanish with interpretation in English available.ArctivismThroughout 2020 the <a href="https://www.hrdhub.org/arctivism" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Arctivism</a> project from the Human Rights Defender Hub at the University of York supported collaborations of activists and artists across the world responding to the outbreak of Covid-19 and its implications for human rights defenders, activism, and shrinking civic and political space. Through film, music, spoken word poetry, story-telling, zines, theatre, drag performance, murals, painting and sculpture 26 projects from 21 countries countered restrictions to civic and public space, limitations to rights and freedoms, and the stifling of dissent.More information on the panellists:Anais Córdova Páez is an ecologist, videographer and hack-feminist. She has carried out several communications projects from a perspective of gender - her work includes national and regional campaigns for the prevention of femicide, in favour of sexual and reproductive rights, and for human rights. She is currently the curator and programmer of the feminist film festival <a href="https://festivalequis.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Equis</a> and leads the spoken and written poetry project LaNin.<a href="https://www.york.ac.uk/cahr/people/piergiuseppeparisi/#research-content" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Piergiuseppe Parisi </a>is a research associate and lecturer at the Centre for Applied Human Rights at the University of York. His research interests are international criminal justice, transitional justice, international human rights law and environmental human rights defenders. Piergiuseppe is also the advocacy director of the Colombian Caravana, a London-based charity that supports human rights lawyers and defenders in Colombia. In this role he has worked on submissions to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations.<a href="https://www.instagram.com/rember_yahuarcani/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rember Yahuarcani</a> is a visual artist, writer and activist who belongs to the Uitoto people in Peru’s northern Amazon. His artistic work focuses on Uitoto ontologies and Amazonian worlds and his activist practice urges respect for the Indigenous worlds that extractivist practices put at risk. His work has been featured in Peru, Brazil, Argentina, US, UK and China and he won the II Intercontinental Biennale of Indigenous Art. Rember recently co-authored the book chapter <a href="https://www.taylorfrancis.com/chapters/oa-edit/10.4324/9780367199005-9/amazonian-waterway-amazonian-water-worlds-giuliana-borea-rember-yahuarcani" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Amazonian Waterway, Amazonian Water-Worlds: Rivers in Government Projects and Indigenous Art</a> which analyses current water conflicts in Peru’s Amazon. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/l_a_s_u_e_r_t_e/?hl=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sofía Acosta Varea</a> is a visual artist whose practice embraces an interdisciplinary approach ranging from installations, photographic interventions, archives, cartography and testimonials, to the use of graphics and murals. Their work encapsulates an aesthetic-political effort that on the one hand challenges established gender narratives and on the other, explores an art proposal that is post-extractivst, putting into debate contemporary notions of territory.
