St Georges Church

Meet at St Georges Church at 11am

The walk takes approx 3 hours and includes a short stop at each church to explore their histories and stories. (Option for shorter walk)

St Georges - Avalanche - St Andrews

The three churches cover Portland history from Anglo Saxon times when the first Church was built on the site of the picturesque ruins of St Andrews above Church Ope Cove. St Georges with its original box pews and lichen covered gravestones bears witness to Portland quarrying and the Avalanche Memorial church to the tragedy of the shipwreck off Portland Bill in 1877. The walk takes us along cliff paths, across quarry lands and through the woods at Church Ope. We take in spectacular views over the sea and the great Chesil bank, the ancient ruins of Rufus castle and the stone windmills.

 
Wear sturdy footwear. Walking sticks useful. Mainly flat walking along defined footpaths. Slope down through wood can be slippery. Steps down and up from St Andrews to Rufus castle. 

 The walk in detail:

From St Georges Walk N. and Turn Left onto S3/20 to SW Coast Path S3/6 - to Southwell Turn Left - S3/49 to Sweethill Road - Avalanche Church - through Churchyard on S3/39 and before it turns left back onto Avalanche road - Turn right on unmarked path around quarry N. along S3/36 - Weston St - Turn Right - Then Left into Pennsylvania Road and right onto Penn Wood footpath S3/96 to Ancient ruins of St Andrews Church - Follow steps from churchyard down towards Church Ope Cove - Turn left up steps to Church Ope viewing point - Left under Rufus Castle arch up Church Ope Road and onto Portland museum. (option to leave the walk here to go explore the museum or continue on to full circle back to St Georges). Turn Right onto Wakeham and cross over road. Turn Left through Glen Caravan Park on S3/54 to Bottom Combe quarry and cross quarry track to S3/24 past Windmill on left - Turn left onto S3/107 - Turn Right onto Weston Rd - St Georges Cemetery - Church.
