This panel event will seek to understand the intersections between Black history and the environment.

This panel event will seek to understand the intersections between Black history and the environment which include discussions around how Black and minority ethnic communities are impacted disproportionately by the worsening climate, how Black voices are often excluded from climate activism, and how we can collectively hold policymakers accountable in the upcoming COP26 conference in Glasgow to ensure our climate activism is antiracist and inclusive.Panellists: Dr Nadine Andrews is chair of Climate Psychology Alliance Scotland, a visiting researcher at the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business at Lancaster University, and works as a social researcher in the Scottish Government currently leading the research on Scotland&#x27;s Climate Citizens&#x27; Assembly. Nadine is also a mindfulness and nature-based coach/trainer, and a qualified Mountain Leader. Mikaela Loach is a climate justice activist, co-host of The Yikes Podcast, writer and 5th year medical student based in Edinburgh. She is one of three claimants taking the UK government to court to challenge the Oil &amp; Gas Association&#x27;s policy in the North Sea and the subsidies and tax breaks the industry is given by the UK government. Her organizing work and Instagram focuses on highlighting the harm caused by the fossil fuel industry, and the intersections of the climate crisis with oppressive systems such as white supremacy and migrant injustices. One of the mighty women on Woman’s Hour’s 2020 Our Planet Power List, Zarina Ahmad previously worked at the Council for Ethnic Minority Voluntary Organisations leading the charge for increasing participation in environmentalism in Scotland. Since being told that &quot;ethnic minorities aren’t interested in climate change&quot;, Zarina has dedicated herself to creating pathways for under-represented groups to work in environmental organisations – increasing not only a diversity of people, but a diversity of ideas. In response to the lack of specific data about ethnic minority groups and environmentalism, Zarina is now researching sustainable behaviours within BAME communities in the UK for a PhD. More recently Zarina was recognised by Edinburgh Science Institute as an inspirational woman who has made a significant impact in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and featured her along 8 other women in this year&#x27;s festival by creating a mural of her and which is displayed in publicly in Edinburgh
