Founded in 1983 and based in London and Hong Kong, WilkinsonEyre is one of the world’s leading architectural practices. Its portfolio of bold, beautiful, intelligent architecture includes; the giant Cooled Conservatories for Gardens by the Bay in Singapore and the renovation of Oxford University’s Weston Library – home to some of the nation’s most valuable literary treasures. Current projects include the restoration of Battersea Power Station and the new Compton and Edrich Stands at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

King's Cross Gasholders

This in person event features WilkinsonEyre’s founding director Chris Wilkinson. He will introduce you to the exterior of the Gasholders building and explain some of projects history, design rationale and answer your questions. King’s Cross is the largest urban development scheme in Europe. Its rich industrial heritage is integral to its renaissance. Among the most distinctive and beautiful features to be retained is the triplet of Grade II-Listed, cast iron gasholder guide frames which were originally constructed in 1867. 
WilkinsonEyre won a design competition in 2002 with a concept for three residential buildings to be housed within the frames. The design proposed three drums of accommodation at differing heights to suggest the movement of the original gasholders, which would have risen up or down depending on the pressure of the gas within. The design was developed to create a dynamic counterpoint between old and new. The heavy industrial aesthetic and raw physical materiality of the guide frames contrasts with the lightness and intricacy of the interior spaces. The circular nature of the buildings result in apartments that are laid out to take advantage of natural daylighting and expansive views.This free event is offered as part of the London Design Festival. Attendance by advance booking only through Eventbrite. Tickets will be made available at noon on September 13th. We are keeping the group size small and capping the event at 25 to allow for an intimate experience. If you are no longer able to use your ticket we would appreciate you releasing it for someone else to enjoy.
