<h3><strong>The event has started. </strong></h3><h3>Please use the link: https://zoom.us/s/97910996026 to join. </h3><h3>If you&#x27;d like a recording of the event and / or to sign up to hear about the rest of the Climate Emergency Series, please also complete the following form (as we won&#x27;t have your details) https://form.jotform.com/201542125567350</h3><h3><strong></strong></h3><h3><strong>Costing the Earth: Embodied Carbon &amp; the Race to Net Zero</strong></h3><p>Within the built environment, attention has tended to focus heavily on operational carbon, with little heed given to the carbon expended through the rest of the life-cycle. </p><p>Yet, over the lifetime of a building, the actual digging, mining and processing raw materials for construction account for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions within the sector and are responsible for catastrophic environmental devastation and biodiversity loss. </p><p>Furthermore, despite the heavy price the planet pays to give up these building materials, we still demolish buildings at an alarming rate, creating tons of carbon-dense waste - before we dig up some more to start building anew. </p><p>As a nation, we’re now falling over ourselves to ramp up construction, with ambitious &#x27;new build&#x27; targets and a call to retrofit the nation’s leaky housing stock. </p><h3>The imperative to act has never been greater. </h3><p>Because, if we don’t stop to measure and mitigate embodied carbon, the environmental damage will be colossal. We won&#x27;t be &#x27;Building Back Better&#x27; and we certainly won&#x27;t be achieving &#x27;net zero&#x27;. In fact, forecasts predict if we carry on ignoring embodied carbon, we&#x27;ll be  <strong>adding</strong> to our carbon footprint rather than reducing it.  </p><p>In this <strong>5th event in LSBU&#x27;s Climate Emergency Series,</strong> we&#x27;ll look at the implications of embodied carbon throughout the whole building life cycle - extraction, transportation, manufacturing, installation, reuse, demolition and disposal. </p><p>Our panel of experts will present a variety of concepts such as policy asks for central government, whole of life thinking within the local authority procurement and planning context. We’ll also look at methods of measuring and mitigating carbon throughout the supply chain, and tools and principles that apply on the drawing board and on the building site. </p><p><em>This event will take place on Zoom Webinar. <h3>Who would enjoy this event?  </h3><p>This event will interest any Built Environment professional who wants to be more effective and influence decisions within their work environment, whether that's in the public arena or private practice, a seasoned practitioner or just starting out.  We'll be assuming a rudimentary knowledge of embodied carbon, but for  those wanting to pre-read, the <a href="https://www.leti.london/ecp" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">LETI Embodied Carbon Primer</a> is a great place to start. </p>
