Birmingham's Hidden Spaces is a project by Associated Architects in association with the Birmingham Post and the Royal Institute of British Architects. Their aim is to show a different side of Birmingham - a side not normally seen by the public and at the same time reveal the people and stories that have shaped its history.

Birmingham's Hidden Spaces

The mysterious Grade II listed Severn Street Masonic Hall sits discretely in the shadow of its relatively new neighbour the Mailbox, giving few clues as to it’s internal function. In fact, the building, was constructed over 150 years before the Mailbox even existed, in a damp, slum area of the city known as the Froggery. Originally built as a synagogue, the building contains many layers of history and holds on tightly to its rich heritage.
For one day only, Birmingham’s Hidden Spaces invites you to explore Birmingham’s oldest Masonic meeting place and discover the surprising array of Masonic artefacts and regalia that it houses.
The guided tours will offer an insight into over 200 years of Freemasonry in Birmingham, with a visit to the Tyler’s Room, containing many fascinating items collected over the years; The Lodge Room, which is the main ceremonial space of the Hall; and also the dining room and bar, used regularly for social occasions.
