Learn more about the history of the Irish language (and pick up a few Irish words and phrases) as part of the Liverpool Irish Festival 2025.

Lecture Theatre 7, Rendall Building

Join us to begin digging into Ireland’s rich linguistic heritage. This session will introduce you to the Irish language, explain a little bit about its origins and history, and provide you with a few words and phrases ‘as Gaeilge’.No previous knowledge of the Irish language is required.The session will be hosted by the Institute of Irish Studies' Dr Eoghan Ahern. Dr Ahern teaches Irish language courses and Irish history moduels at the Institute of Irish Studies. His research interests lie in the early medieval period (c.400–c.900), particularly the literary and intellectual culture of Ireland and Britain.This session is part of the Institute of Irish Studies' contribution to the 2025 Liverpool Irish Festival, which takes place in venues across Liverpool from 16 to 26 October.
