Overview

This course is aimed at Primary School teachers who would like to introduce or improve STEM Horticulture activities in school.

Six week online evening course (Monday evenings) with 1 practical day in Helensburgh on Wednesday 4th March 2026, 10AM-3PM.

This course is delivered by experienced horticulturists who have been teaching horticulture for many years and will provide you with invaluable hints and tips for delivering practical horticulture in a fun and manageable way that fits into a term time pattern.

Course Content

  • School calendar & timings: seasonality, mapping activities to the school year, reducing holiday committment
  • STEM and Horticuture
  • Horticulture and environment: Health and wellbeing
  • Starting our: Tools, equipment and facilities. PPE, risk assesing
  • Plant identification and plant groups
  • Maintenance / cultivation (soils, hedges, pruning)
  • Design - what to grow and where to put it
  • Propagation (seed, cuttings, division)
  • Vegetables, fruit & flower production (organics): Link to healthy eating
  • Net Zero /sustainability considerations
  • Project ideas / case studies

Curriculum for Excellence Mapping & School Planning - how to evidence horticultural activity against school environment aims and STEM targets, will be embedded throughout the course.
