Nationwide arts festival celebrating refugees from Nazi Europe and their contribution to British cultureMarch 2020 marked the official end of the festival, but also the beginning of a longer-term commitment to celebrating the impact of this remarkable generation of émigrés under the Insiders/Outsiders umbrella

Insiders Outsiders

This event will focus on the many facets of Jack Bilbo’s colourful life and career, including his time in Onchan internment camp.

<p><strong>Jack Bilbo</strong> (born Hugo Baruch) - self-taught artist, adventurer, author, gallery owner and legendary bohemian – was born in Berlin in 1907. He was forced to leave Germany after campaigning against the Nazis, and eventually settled in London in 1936. After internment in 1939 in Onchan Camp on the Isle of Man (where he presided over its cultural activities), Bilbo returned to London and founded the Modern Art Gallery in 1941 where he established an idiosyncratic wartime salon and showed works by Picasso and Schwitters alongside unknown artists.</p><p>This talk and discussion will focus on Bilbo as an émigré artist and on some of the many facets of his extraordinary life and career.</p><p><strong>Jane England</strong> is an art historian and gallery director who has curated and arranged several exhibitions of Bilbo’s work and a survey exhibition about his war-time art gallery.
