Ines Newman & Rachel Dickson will discuss the friendship between Ines’ grandfather, engineer Wilhelm Hollitscher and artist Hugo Dachinger

By way of introduction, Ines Newman will summarise her reasons for conceiving of and editing the book on her grandfather Wilhelm Hollitscher’s internment diary: Internment in Britain in 1940: Life and Art Behind the Wire. She will emphasise the importance of the story of internment being retold after eighty years.Rachel Dickson will then take as the starting point for her short illustrated talk the remarkable portrait of Wilhelm Hollitscher made by fellow Austrian internee, Hugo Dachinger, in Huyton camp in August 1940, which was acquired by Ben Uri amid much excitement in June 2016. The artwork, along with Hollitscher&#x27;s diary, provide a prism through which to introduce the relationship between artist and sitter in internment and beyond, some of the practical obstacles facing interned artists who strove to continue their profession behind the wire, and wider issues around the development of modern German art in Britain from the 1930s onwards. She will also describe the remarkable unravelling of the mystery of the sitter who remained unknown to Ben Uri until a surprising turn of events in spring 2018 enabled portrait and descendants to be identified and reunited.
