Research Software Camp: Do we have the right tools for research?

The Software Sustainability Institute (www.software.ac.uk) is an EPSRC, AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, NERC, MRC and STFC funded national facility that cultivates world-class research with software.We help people build better software, and we work with researchers, developers, funders and infrastructure providers to identify key issues and best practice in research software.

The <a href="https://www.software.ac.uk/RSCamp-beyond-spreadsheet" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet</a> is delighted to present the discussion panel “Do we have the right tools for research?” taking place online on Friday 5th November 2021, from 2 to 3pm GMT.Join our expert panelists in a conversation around the use of spreadsheets in research, spreadsheets as powerful tools to handle data, and what’s available for researchers who wish to move beyond spreadsheets. Our experts come from different research backgrounds and represent various tools, such as Lambda for Excel (Microsoft), Google Sheets, Open Refine, Filament, and languages, such as Python and R. We will be presenting as many views as possible from using spreadsheets as a powerful tool in research data management to discussing options for moving beyond them. Here you can also answer the questions &#x27;What would you like to know when learning to code?&#x27; and &#x27;What resources would you recommend for someone learning to code?&#x27;Some of our panellists will be teaching a workshop or publish a recorded presentation on the tool/language they’re representing. This free online event is part of the Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet organised by the Software Sustainability Institute. It will be hosted on Zoom, and a link to join the session will be sent out to attendees a couple of hours before the event. <h3>About the Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet</h3>Our autumn Research Software Camp: Beyond the Spreadsheet will run for two weeks from 1st to 12th November 2021. We will focus on the uses of spreadsheets in research and the next steps into further use of software in research. Our events and resources will collate different perspectives, experiences, and best practice of the use of spreadsheets, as well as signpost to existing resources.

The Software Sustainability Institute runs free online Research Software Camps twice a year over the course of two weeks.Each Camp focusses on introducing and exploring a topic around research software, thus starting discussions among various research communities.
