Male Allies Challenging Sexismis a pro-feminist men's organisation. We have been organising and taking action since 2021. We hold a monthly discussion group, run workshops, attend feminist events, engage in protest and hold an annual conference in solidarity wiithFiLiA.As in previous years, theMen Challenging Sexism Conference 2025conference is organised after consulation with FiLiA.

Male Allies Challenging Sexism

A panel discussion about how masculinity holds men back, how it contributes to rape culture & sexual violence and links to climate change.

SUMMARY:Masculinity, as expressed in our patriarchal system(s) has wide ranging consequences. Not only for humans, but also for our societies and in effect for the planet. In this panel, Dr Stephen Burrell (Researcher at the <a href="https://www.durham.ac.uk/research/institutes-and-centres/research-violence-abuse/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse</a> and co-host of the <a href="https://now-and-men.captivate.fm/episode/future-men" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Now and Men Podcast</a>, UK), Mohit Dudeja (Founder and President of the <a href="http://mendlifefoundation.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mendlife Foundation</a> and researcher with a focus on the intersectional dynamics of gender, sexuality, and education, India) and Dr Gerald Walton (Co-author of <a href="https://www.diopress.com/product-page/being-boys" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Being Boys: Shaping Gender Norms to Weaken Rape Culture</a>, Canada) will discuss how masculinity holds men back, how it contributes to rape culture &amp; sexual violence and what the links are between masculinity, privilege, power and climate change.Tickets for this panel discussion are available by donation from £1. Our suggested donation for the event is £5. ALL PROCEEDS from ticket sales will be donated to <a href="https://www.womensaid.org.uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Women's Aid</a> and <a href="https://womenforafghanwomen.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Women for Afghan Women</a>.PANELLISTS:

Dr Stephen Burrell is a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Durham University, UK. His work focuses on critical studies on men and masculinities, and his PhD explored the role of men and boys in preventing men’s violence against women. He has also undertaken research on masculine gender norms for the UK Government Equalities Office, co-authored a book on <a href="https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/mens-activism-to-end-violence-against-women" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Men’s Activism to End Violence Against Women</a>, and is currently investigating the how to engage men and boys in building more caring relationships with the planet. Stephen is a Deputy Director of the Durham <a href="https://www.durham.ac.uk/research/institutes-and-centres/research-violence-abuse/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse</a> (CRiVA), a trustee of <a href="https://now-and-men.captivate.fm/episode/future-men" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">White Ribbon UK</a>, and co-hosts a new podcast called <a href="https://now-and-men.captivate.fm/episode/future-men" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Now and Men</a>.

Mohit Dudeja (He/She/They) is the founder and president of <a href="http://www.mendlifefoundation.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mendlife Foundation</a>, an Indian NGO whose mission it is to educate and empower underprivileged youth. They are presently working on a project called <a href="http://www.queeracademia.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Queer Academia</a> which seeks to amplify queer voices in the academic discourse. He also works as a facilitator with The Gender Lab. Previously Mohit has worked with organizations like <a href="https://www.icrw.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">International Center for Research on Women</a> (ICRW) and World Brain Center &amp; Research Institute. In his research, he is exploring the intersectional dynamics of gender, sexuality, and education.

Dr. Gerald Walton is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Among other publications and presentations for academics and the general public, he edited the volume, <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gay-Agenda-Claiming-Identity-Counterpoints/dp/143311836X" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The gay agenda: Claiming space, identity, and justice</a> (2014), and co-authored the book, <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gay-Agenda-Claiming-Identity-Counterpoints/dp/143311836X" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Being boys: Shaping gender norms to weaken rape culture</a> (2021). Across his student and professional career, his work focuses on bullying, masculinity, gender, and sexuality. Dr. Walton identifies as neither trans nor cis. He describes his childhood as being a "failed boy”, situated on the fringe of normative cultures of manhood his entire life and eventually finding pathways toward self-acceptance which have equipped him with a view of masculinity from an outsider's perspective, looking in. His experiences of marginalization and stigma are a key platform of his teaching and research.
