Allerdale’s Search Area has been announced – what happens next?

The Working Group have now announced a 'Search Area' where potentially a site for a facility could be found. Come along to hear more.

The Allerdale GDF Working Group was formed in January 2021 to take the first step in a conversation about whether Allerdale could be the right place to build a Geological Disposal Facility, or GDF, to permanently dispose of higher activity radioactive waste. Part of their job was to identify a ‘Search Area’ within which Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) could look for a potentially suitable site to build a facility. This early-stage work has now been completed and a Search Area which covers 13 Allerdale District electoral wards has been identified as having that potential.About this event This online community event is an opportunity for you to meet representatives from the Working Group and RWM, to ask questions and find out more about the process and what this Search Area announcement means for you and your community.The events will be held on Zoom. What is a GDF?A geological Disposal Facility, or GDF is an underground facility designed to safely and securely dispose of our radioactive waste – specifically ‘higher-activity’ waste (the most radioactive kind). Geological disposal is one of the UK’s largest ever environmental protection projects, which would provide a safe and secure long-term solution for the disposal of higher activity radioactive waste and could create investment and jobs over many generations.About the Allerdale GDF Working GroupThe Working Group, who are neither for nor against building a GDF in Allerdale, is independently Chaired by Jocelyn Manners-Armstrong, and members include local representatives from Allerdale Borough Council, Radioactive Waste Management Ltd (RWM), Cumbria Association of Local Councils (CALC), and Genr8North Ltd – the Interested Party that came forward and asked for Allerdale to be considered as a potential location.The Allerdale GDF Working Group was formed in January 2021 and has three primary tasks: -•	Begin the conversation with the people of Allerdale about a GDF potentially being in the area•	Identify a search area(s) for consideration for the location of a GDF within Allerdale, and•	Identify/recruit members for a potential Community PartnershipAbout the hosts: Community OrganisersCommunity Organisers is a national charity, and the membership body and training organisation for community organising in England. We are passionate about bringing people together, supporting them to take the lead in shaping their area.
