Polly Atkin launches her second collection Much With Body live on Zoom

Polly Atkin’s new collection <a href="https://www.serenbooks.com/productdisplay/much-body" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Much With Body</a> is a Poetry Book Society winter choice. In this collection, the beauty of the Lake District is both balm and mirror, refracting pain and also soothing it with distraction: unusual descriptions of frogs, birds, a great stag that ‘you will not see’. Much of the landscape is lakescape, giving the book a watery feel, the author’s wild swimming being just one kind of immersion. There is also a distinct link with the past in a central section of found poems taken from transcripts of the journals of Dorothy Wordsworth, from a period late in her life when she was often ill. In common with the works of the Wordsworths, these poems share a quality of the metaphysical sublime. Their reverence for the natural world is an uneasy awe, contingent upon knowledge of our fragility and mortality.In this online event, Polly will be reading from the book alongside guest readers Hannah Hodgson, Éireann Lorsung and Claudine Toutoungi.Captions will be provided by Otter.ai and the poems will be shared on screen during the readings.<a href="https://www.serenbooks.com/productdisplay/much-body" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Order Much With Body on the Seren website: £9.99</a>Please note: Registration will close at 6:30pm on Wednesday 20th October. Her first poetry collection Basic Nest Architecture appeared in 2017 and was longlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Prize. She is also the author of a number of pamphlets including Shadow Dispatches (Seren) which won the Mslexia Poetry Pamphlet prize and a biography Recovering Dorothy: The Hidden Life of Dorothy Wordsworth (Saraband, 2021). She is working on a memoir exploring place, belonging and disability.Hannah Hodgson is a prize-winning poet and writer living with life-limiting illness. She has collaborated on a graphic memoir, and is the recipient of a 2020 Northern Writers Award for Poetry. Her first poetry pamphlet Dear Body was published by Wayleave Press in 2018, followed in 2020 by Where I&#x27;d Watch Plastic Trees Not Grow. Her first collection will be published by Seren in Spring 2022.Éireann Lorsung&#x27;s lastest collection is The Century (Milkweed, 2021), winner of the 2021 Maine Literary Award, as well as two previous collections of poems: Her book and Music for Landing Planes By, which was named a New and Noteworthy collection by Poets &amp; Writers. She received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 2016. Since completing an MFA at the University of Minnesota, Lorsung has studied printmaking and drawing at Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice and taught high school in rural France. While living in Belgium, she ran micropress MIEL Books. Claudine Toutoungi’s second collection Two Tongues (Carcanet), following her 2017 debut Smoothie (Carcanet) is shortlisted for the 2021 Ledbury Munthe Poetry Prize for Second Collections. She also writes for stage and radio.
