Free, online masterclass on using YouTube for explainers, shorts, breaking news and documentaries

As journalists and news publishers strive to build trust and reach wider audiences, YouTube remains one of the most powerful, and often underused, storytelling platforms for journalism.From explainers and documentaries to breaking news and shorts, YouTube offers opportunities to create depth, context and connection with audiences who want to understand the world, not just scroll past it.In this free, two-hour masterclass, we’ll explore how journalists can use YouTube effectively to reach new audiences, grow subscribers and tell powerful stories through long-form and short-form video.Our speaker for this session is Tash Salmon, senior journalist for BBC News Socials. Previously associate digital editor and audience editor at The i Paper, Tash now helps shape BBC News’s digital storytelling across its major platforms, including YouTube (15.9m subscribers), Instagram (27.5m followers), and TikTok (3.2m followers).This free masterclass on Wednesday 19th November from 4pm is brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab at Newcastle University. It’s open to anyone interested in journalism, social storytelling or audience engagement. However registration is essential, as we’ll email joining instructions a few hours before the session begins.Please note: this is an online-only event, delivered via Microsoft Teams. Once registered, you’ll receive the link and details a few hours before the masterclass begins.
