Fue corresponsal de The Times de Londres en Madrid durante el periodo de la transición española a la democracia entre 1975 y 1978. Entre 1978 y 1984 fue corresponsal del Financial Times en México DF, cubriendo México y América Central, antes de volver a Madrid en 1986.Ha escrito más de 20 libros sobre varios países, cuatro de los cuales fueron publicados por el Real Instituto Elcano entre 2002 y 2016. Autor de <a href="https://www.realinstitutoelcano.org/?s=inside+spain" title="https://www.realinstitutoelcano.org/?s=inside+spain" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Inside Spain</a> entre abril de 2004 y septiembre de 2021, la sección mensual sobre España del Boletín/Newsletter del Real Instituto Elcano. He was a correspondent for The Times of London in Madrid during Spain’s transition to democracy from 1975 to 1978. From 1978 to 1984, he was a correspondent for the Financial Times in Mexico City, covering Mexico and Central America, before returning to Madrid in 1986.He has written more than 20 books on various countries, four of which were published by the Elcano Royal Institute between 2002 and 2016. He was the author of Inside Spain from April 2004 to September 2021, the monthly section on Spain in the Elcano Institute’s newsletter. Since November 2021, he has been writing a monthly post on Spain that also appears in the newsletter.He has been a Visiting Scholar at Bilkent University (Ankara) and at the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at New York University. He has lectured at the universities of Oxford, Princeton, Harvard, Chicago, Georgetown, and the London School of Economics.In 2018, he curated the exhibition on Arturo Barea (1897–1957) at the Instituto Cervantes in Madrid and organized several events to revive the legacy of the exiled writer, including the naming of a square in Madrid in his honor. He has held Spanish nationality since November 2021 by Royal Decree. Michael Portillo was born in North London in 1953. His father, Luis, had come to Britain as a refugee at the end of the Spanish Civil War, and his mother, Cora, was brought up in Fife. She met Luis while she was an undergraduate at Oxford. Michael attended a grammar school, Harrow County, and went to Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he gained a first class degree in History. He left Cambridge in 1975, and for a year worked for a shipping company. He moved to the Conservative Research Department in 1976, where he spent three years. At the General Election in 1979 he was responsible for briefing Margaret Thatcher before her press conferences. For the next two years he was special adviser to the Secretary of State for Energy. He worked for Kerr McGee Oil (UK) Ltd from 1981 - 1983. He contested the Birmingham Perry Bar seat at the 1983 Election. Even in English.
