Controlling invasive plants using environmental methods - biological agents (fungus & weevils), conservation grazing and mechanical removal.

The Scottish Invasive Species Initiative is a large-scale invasive species control project working along rivers across the northern third of Scotland. During this webinar we’ll be hearing from several projects who are using and trialling alternative non-chemical methods of controlling riparian and aquatic invasive plants including biological control agents, mechanical removal and conservation grazing.There will be plenty of time for questions within the session.Flocking to the rescue! - The Macduff sheep grazing trialKaren Muller, Project Officer with the Scottish Invasive Species Initiative, will update on the progress of the Macduff sheep grazing trial, running in a riparian woodland site alongside the River Deveron.The trial has been running for three years and aims to establish the optimal grazing regime for using sheep to control Giant hogweed.Tackling aquatic invasive plants on inland waterways Charles Hughes, the Invasive Non-Native Species Project Manager at the Canal and River Trust, will be talking about the work of a 4-year invasive species eradication project in the Severn Trent catchment. In particular he&#x27;ll be explaining about the work focused on two aquatic invasive species on the canal system - Floating Pennywort and the Water Fern (Azolla). This includes innovative biocontrol using weevils and mechanical control.Using a rust fungus for the management of Himalayan balsam Emily Iles, the Tweed Invasives Project Officer at the Tweed Forum, will be presenting the work being undertaken in the River Tweed catchment in trialling the use of the rust fungus pathogen to control Himalayan balsam. The biological control agent was first released in 2016, with further releases in 2020 - including the first in Scotland.Essentially the idea is to establish a self-sustaining rust fungus population so that, over time, rust infection can reach sufficiently high levels to spread naturally in wind currents to other Himalayan balsam-invaded sites.____________________________________________________________________________________The Scottish Invasive Species Initiative is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and NatureScot - for more information about the project please visit <a href="https://www.invasivespecies.scot/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.invasivespecies.scot </a>This event will be hosted on Zoom.
