Caring for God’s Acre works nationally to support groups and individuals to investigate, care for, and enjoy burial grounds and graveyards.There are over 20,000 burial grounds in England and Wales, ranging from small rural medieval churchyards to large Victorian city cemeteries, spanning different cultures, religions and centuries.Appealing to many who are interested in local history and the natural world, burial grounds encapsulate the history of communities whilst offering refuge for our native wildlife.For many people burial grounds are the only locally accessible green space. However, their heritage value, and even their continuing presence, cannot be taken for granted. They are under threat from development, closure, under management and mismanagement.Join the movement. Let’s keep burial grounds beautiful, accessible and connected to their communities.

Join the Celebrating Birmingham&#x27;s Burial Grounds Project for an afternoon of talks on subjects around this burial ground mapping and recording project in the Dickens Room of the Birmingham and Midlands institute in central Birmingham.Featuring;Burial Ground Memorials, an Under Appreciated Heritage - Harold Mytum, Professor of Archaeology at University of Liverpool. Harold is a leading expert on the study of graveyard memorials and author of several books and numerous papers. From Churchyard to Cemetery, Burials in Birmingham 18th to 20th Century - Josie Wall is the Activities Programme Manager for the Jewellery Quarter Cemeteries Project and a PhD student at the University of Birmingham. Her thesis is looking at the development of cemetery landscapes and changing monument styles 1800-1914. Josie has worked in Birmingham’s heritage sector since 2014, including 3 years at the Coffin Works Museum. To List or not? the discussion around protecting memorials.- Colin Fenn, Vice chairman of the National Federation of Cemetery Friends.Tickets are free thanks to the funding of Historic England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Garfield Weston Foundation.Light refreshments will be served.For your safety and comfort we have ensured that we are using a room with twice the capacity of the available tickets for this event.
