EastBio SPRE Post Placement Learning Day

EastBio SPRE Post Placement Learning Day

By School of Biological Sciences

Overview

Designed to provide both a facilitated and student-led space to reflect and make sense of your placement experience.

Facilitator name(s): Dave Blackbell and/or Catherine-Rose Stocks-Rankin

This in-person learning day is designed to provide both a facilitated and student-led space to reflect and make sense of your placement experience. This is aligned with the requirement to complete a short feedback report and summary of your experience, but will provide an opportunity for you to engage deeper with your learning and with your peers.

You will be facilitated through a structured process for experiential learning, such as the Kolb Learning Cycle, providing you with both new insights and implications about your placement experience and personal development in reflective practice – a core competency for most professional environments. In addition, one of the learning sessions will be student-led.

This full-day in-person workshop will include a mix of structured individual and peer-to-peer reflection, facilitated discussion and 1:1 support. Importantly, you will also spend independent time with peers, sharing questions, concerns and challenges about your placement experience in a safe environment – as well as time and mechanisms for providing anonymous feedback.

All catering will be provided.

We will use an online interactive platform (mentimeter) to capture collective insights and feedback, providing all participants an appreciation of what their peers have learned and identified as important. Breaks and multiple options for participating in the session will be included, to help accommodate participants' diverse preferences, energy levels and neurotypes.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Clear understanding of your placement experience, what you learned and what this implies for your next steps.
  • Appreciation of what your peers have learned, to enable you to make sense of your own experience in relation to others’.
  • Understanding and confidence in applying a structured process for reflective practice, to improve your ability to learn and adapt in any professional environment.

Recommended reading: Any pre-reading materials will be sent out in advance of the session.
