Overview

This course will run on Monday evenings 6PM - 8:30PM, from 16th March to15th June 2026 (with a break for Easter).

Discover how to create beautiful, thriving garden spaces in this hands-on, 12-week course.

What you'll learn:

  • To identify a wide range of types plants and learn about the environmental conditions that they need to thrive in gardens
  • How to design plant combinations and draw up planting plans
  • How to best prepare ground, establish a range of plants and maintain them once planted
  • About soils and how to improve them for different types of plants
  • About the different types of maintenance different plants need including feeding, staking and pruning

During the course you will design a plant collection for your own garden, or an alternative suitable site and specify the materials required to establish your collection. There will be a dedicated practical day to give you hands-on experience in ground preparation, planting and maintenance.

Practical Days:
Practical days will be delivered in Helensburgh and Dunoon. Students must travel to either location to participate:

  • Helensburgh: Thursday 2nd April, 10:00–14:30
  • Dunoon: Thursday 23rd April, 10:00–14:30

Assessment:

This course contains no exams or tests. It is assessed through a planting design project based on a site of your choice and through observation of practical work you will carry out on your practical day.

Equipment:

  • Drawing pencil
  • A3 paper
  • Ruler
  • Set of compasses
  • Optional - scale ruler, circle template, colouring pencils or paints, laptop or computer if joining from home

How you will be taught

Classes will be delivered in a live, online classroom. You may attend any mainland Argyll UHI Argyll local centre (island centres are closed from 5PM). Alternatively, you may join from home using a laptop or PC with camera and microphone enabled - you'll need the MS Teams application. Devices such as tablets and smartphones are not suitable for participating in this class.
