Community renewable energy in Thornbury: discussion group

Thornbury Leisure CentreThornbury, England
Wednesday, Feb 4 from 6 pm to 8:30 pm GMT
Overview

Could you benefit from locally owned renewables? Join an IN-PERSON meeting to discuss options for Thornbury.

About this meeting

As part of the 'Future Energy Landscapes' project in South Gloucestershire, we invite you to explore how community-owned renewable energy could benefit your area. These are clean energy projects that are designed, owned, and led by local people, with the benefits staying in the community, depending on what’s suitable for your area. This is your chance to help shape energy projects that are designed and directed by local people.

This meeting is part of a series of conversations that have been ongoing in Thornbury since April 2024, including a workshop on renewable energy, an open survey, and a stall at Thornbury Farmers Market. This meeting is the next step in the discussion to understand if there is appetite in Thornbury to pursue a community-owned renewable energy project, and if so, what might this look like.

This meeting will cover the following topics:

  • Community energy and how it works in practice
  • The benefits for the Thornbury community
  • Discussion of your views on community energy
  • The roles for community members in the process
  • If appropriate, a discussion on which locations you would consider suitable for a renewable energy project that is community-owned
  • Summary of next steps and opportunities for Thornbury

A meeting agenda will be shared closer to the time but if you have any questions in the meantime please contact communities@cse.org.uk.

Key details:

  • Tickets booked here are for the in-person event. If you'd prefer to attend online, we are repeating this event on the 10 February 2025 via Zoom. You can register for an online event ticket here.
  • Buffet and refreshments will be provided.
  • Please sign up to help us understand how many people are attending.

About Future Energy Landscapes

Future Energy Landscapes is a project led by the Centre for Sustainable Energy, in partnership with Bristol Energy Co-operative and South Gloucestershire Council. The project is funded by the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme and is running in six communities in South Gloucestershire. In Thornbury, the project is working alongside Climate Action Thornbury and Surrounding Areas to start conversations about energy use and renewable energy generation. Community-led energy projects keep benefits local – from cheaper energy bills to investment in local facilities. When communities lead energy projects, they create solutions that work for everyone – tackling both climate change and rising energy costs. This project aims to explore the options for community energy projects in South Gloucestershire and give local people a voice.
