Overview

Explore practical insights into transformative sustainability in health and social care.

Join us to explore how sustainability in health and social care can be both practical and transformative, shaping resilient systems that care for people and the planet.

Throughout 2026, the IHSCM Greener Care Special Interest Group (SIG) will deliver a series of roundtables and PowerHours designed to build momentum, confidence, and capability across the health and social care sector.

The programme brings together leaders, practitioners, researchers, and system partners to explore practical, evidence‑based approaches to sustainable transformation.

The SIG will focus on:

· System‑level sustainability challenges

· Cost‑effective renewable integration

· Clinical transformation and circularity

· Risk management and organisational readiness

· Workforce confidence, eco‑anxiety, and specialty collaboration

· Practical business‑case development for greener care

Elaine Mead, Chair of the Greener Care SIG, will host the series and contribute research‑informed insights on education, circularity, and behaviour change. Elaine is Executive Director at Improvement Care and Compassion, and has served as the chair of the IHSCM Greener Care Special Interest Group since 2021.

Further information on each session can be found in the agenda section below.

The planned roundtables are:

  1. Sustainable Solutions for Systemic Challenges - 15th January, 12-1pm
  2. Round Table: Cost Savings and Renewable Integration - 12th March, 12-1pm
  3. Round Table: Beyond the Greener Plan: Transformation, Risks, and Trust - 14th May, 12-1pm

Why Attend

Our upcoming events go beyond the technical aspects of sustainability to address the realities of health and social care. By focusing on clinical transformation, we keep patient pathways and care delivery at the heart of the conversation. Through risk management, we ensure greener practices never compromise safety or service quality. And by tackling the human factors — building confidence, easing competition between specialities, and supporting staff through eco-anxiety — we shine a light on the wellbeing and morale that underpin long-term success.

IHSCM Members can attain 2 High Performance Leadership Framework points towards Innovation and Operational Leadership, for each session attended https://ihm.org.uk/hpl-dashboard/

These events are FREE for IHSCM members*. For those who are not yet members of the IHSCM Tickets are £32.00 per session (incl. VAT).

Round Table: Beyond the Greener Plan: Transformation, Risks & Trust - 14th May

Rose Gallagher, Zainab Rasheed, Colonel David Bates, Prof. Anne Harriss

Join an exceptional panel of leaders and practitioners from across the NHS, social care, occupational health, and organisational development as they explore what it truly takes to move greener care from plans on paper to embedded, everyday practice. Together, they bring rich insight into organisational transformation, clinical leadership, workforce wellbeing, risk and governance, and community based service delivery. Their combined perspectives will unpack the cultural, relational, and operational shifts needed to drive long term sustainable change across health and social care.

What We'll Explore

• Moving beyond plan refreshes toward long term, system wide transformation • Risk assessment and mitigation in greener practice • Building trust and confidence across clinical and operational teams • Supporting staff through eco anxiety, change fatigue, and uncertainty • Encouraging collaboration across specialties, sectors, and systems

Learning Outcomes

• Practical frameworks for risk aware, sustainable transformation • Strategies for culture building and workforce engagement
