Session 2 out of eight: Code of Conduct Part 1 & Cultural Awareness

Cleveland Clinic London (CCL) invites you to join the Medical Interpreting Training Programme (MITP), a dynamic and immersive programme designed for interpreters who are aiming to develop their skills in the medical interpreting field.

This programme consists of eight sessions over two months; once a week from 9:30-16:30. The last (i.e. 8th) session will be an assessment in order to obtain a completion certificate for the MITP. Please note, only participants who have attended all seven sessions and completed the assessment (i.e. Session 8) will receive their certificate of completion.

Please note that this is not a separate CPD session, but session two out of eight of MITP. If you wish to register for the full programme, please see the Medical Interpreting Training Programme main event page.

Session 2: Code of Conduct Part 1 & Cultural Awareness

Summary of the session:

In this second session, we will emphasise that ethical conduct is fundamental to medical interpreting. As interpreters, your role extends beyond language to encompass empathy, advocacy, and cultural sensitivity. We will highlight the critical importance of upholding confidentiality, impartiality, and professionalism in your work. Our goal is to ensure that you gain a comprehensive understanding of the ethical standards that govern our profession, enabling you to provide accurate, unbiased, and professional interpreting services. Furthermore, we will examine available Codes of Conduct for interpreters, conducting an analysis of their key principles and professional guidelines.

We will also discuss cultural awareness as a key part of our role as cultural brokers. This session marks the first part of our focus on the Code of Professional Conduct, which will continue in Part 2 on 7 October 2025.
