Overview

Is there really such thing as a "flying ant day"? Professor Adam Hart (University of Gloucestershire) delves into the topic in this webinar.

Every summer the UK media abounds with "flying ant day" stories. But is there really such a thing as a single "flying ant day"? How coordinated are these ant mating flights across the country? Which species are involved? What conditions lead to them? In this presentation, find out how these questions were answered with the help of thousands of citizen scientists across the UK.

Professor Adam Hart is an entomologist, conservation scientist and broadcaster based at the University of Gloucestershire. He has made wide use of citizen science tools to investigate nationwide natural events, including ant nuptial flights ("flying ants"), house spider emergence in autumn ("spider season"), starling murmurations, and wasps (through the on-going Big Wasp Survey).
