WAYS IN...Thinking about Art

66 Church StLondon, England
Saturday, Mar 7 from 2 pm to 4 pm GMT
Overview

Thinking About Art A relaxed, no-jargon workshop exploring how artworks communicate ideas, feelings, and context—without needing prior knowl

Thinking About Art is a guided, accessible workshop for anyone who has ever stood in front of an artwork and thought “I don’t know what I’m supposed to be seeing.”

This session focuses on how to think about art, rather than how to judge it or “get it right.” Together, we slow things down and explore how artworks communicate ideas, emotions, stories, and intentions — using simple tools that anyone can apply, regardless of background or experience.

You’ll be introduced to practical ways of looking that remove pressure and panic. We’ll talk about what an artwork is doing, what questions it raises, and how context (such as time, place, materials, or the artist’s choices) can gently unlock meaning. There are no trick questions, no academic language, and no expectation to perform or speak unless you want to.

This workshop is ideal for:

  • People who feel intimidated by galleries or art language
  • Curious beginners who want a way in
  • Artists who want to refresh how they look and think
  • Anyone who enjoys thoughtful conversation without judgment

You don’t need prior knowledge, and there is no “correct” interpretation. The emphasis is on observation, curiosity, and confidence — building a calm, usable framework you can take into any gallery or visual experience in the future.

This is thinking time, not testing time.
Looking, not proving.
Art, without the fear.

Agenda

-

Arriving & Settling in ( 10 mins ) Thinking about art — without jargon

1, A gentle welcome and orientation. No icebreakers, no pressure. Just time to land and get comfortable. 2, We explore a small number of artworks together, focusing on how to look rather than what to think. Simple prompts help unpack what an artwork is doing, how it communicates, and why it might matter — without theory or “correct” answers.

-

Looking together ( no panic )

3 Guided shared looking. We slow the pace right down, practise noticing, and learn how to stay grounded in front of art. Speaking is optional; listening is enough.

-

Talking about art (20 minutes)

4 , A relaxed, optional conversation about what came up. We focus on describing, wondering, and connecting — not analysing or judging.
