Department of Methodology Seminar Series
We are thrilled to have Dr Iman Dawood present at our seminar on Friday 13 February, from 2.00pm to 3.00pm.
How Ideologies Become Invisible: Methodological Reflections on the Study of ‘Common Sense’
Social and religious movements frequently change discourse, norms, and practices beyond their movement base, reshaping what is taken for granted, what feels ‘normal’ or ‘obvious’, or what Gramsci refers to as ‘common sense’. This cultural impact remains understudied however, in part, due to methodological challenges. How do we study what is invisible? What goes unquestioned? What people take for granted? But also, what is silenced, marginalized, or devalued?
This presentation examines how ethnography can capture the ways movements interact with and reshape 'common sense,' drawing on a case study of Salafism, a 'conservative' Islamic social movement, in the UK.
