Introduction to Navigation - Saltaire - Women's-only Group

Tired of depending on your phone or friends to lead the way? Not sure where to start with navigation? Learning to read a map is your gateway to independence and adventure.

You'll discover how to:

  • Identify and use map symbols
  • Understand access rights so you can roam responsibly
  • Measure distances and estimate travel times
  • Use a compass to set your map and take bearings


The important bits:

When: 14th February 2026, 10 am

Meeting Point: Victoria Road, Saltaire, BD18 3LE

Overall Hike Rating: Moderate, including some sections off paths. We will cover approximately 11km with around 350m elevation gain in total

Duration: 5 hours

Facilities: Toilets are available at the start of the. Refreshments are available in Saltaire at the end of the hike

Access: Saltaire is served by regular trains and buses, so we encourage arriving by public transport. There are also car parks in Saltaire


The essentials:

Please come prepared for a day out in beautiful British weather! Trails can be rough and wet, so wear comfortable walking boots or sturdy trainers. Make sure you pack waterproofs, spare layers, and plenty of water and snacks to keep you going. As we will spend a bit more time standing than usual, be sure to layer up well to stay cosy. Maps and compasses will be provided.

The day includes plenty of opportunities to stop and pause to rest, eat and change layers.
