1981 – The Year Moss Side Exploded! Black History Workshop for ages 13-18
Date and time
Workshop on the 1981 Moss Side Uprisings followed by creative writing/spoken word workshop. Led by Linford Sweeney and Shirley May.
About this event
Want to know more about Manchester’s history? Come and learn about the 1981 Moss Side Uprisings in a free workshop delivered by Manchester's own Black History tutor, Linford Sweeney - who was there when it happened. A creative writing/spoken word workshop will follow which will be delivered by our poet in residence Shirley May, founder and director of Young Identity.
The sessions will enable the participants to creatively respond to the issues raised by the uprisings 40 years ago as well as the Black Lives Matters protests over the last 18 months, using words and poetry to connect stories of the past with the present. You will also be offered the opportunity to perform your own creation or have your poetry performed by a spoken word artist at a sharing event in Manchester City Centre on 28 October 2021 (details provided in the session).
Places are limited so booking is essential.
Refreshments provided.
History Session Content:
(1) Before the Uprisings - Tensions, frustrations, and anger in the streets.
(2) When Moss Side Exploded - Why did it happen? Who was involved?
(3) After the Uprisings - Did anything change?
Creative Session led by Shirley May – “Protest Poetry”
(4) Come and write your own spoken words so that you can “rise up” to the challenge of learning about Manchester’s hidden histories.
