Author Event - Alex Harvey In conversation with Pete Jackson
As discussion about Alex's new book Little Kingdoms: An A–Z of Early Medieval Britain
Little Kingdoms is a book about what happened to England, Wales, Scotland, and the Isle of Man between the Romans and the Vikings, long called the ‘Dark Ages’.
This period saw the creation of countless territories out of the ruins of Imperial towns and cities, as warlords new and old staked their claim to the high hills, winding wolds, and malarial marshes of the British Isles.
Across these varied landscapes, kingdoms big and small, popular and obscure, of all shapes and sizes, were fashioned and maintained through warfare, trade, and political expansionism. Little Kingdoms collects these stories, drawn together through a mixture of chronicles, archaeology, and hard-won place name studies, and compiles them into a list of over sixty episodic narratives. Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria, Elmet, and Lindsey, and many more lost realms that existed between and beyond these lands: all are contained within, resurrected through illustrations, maps, and more than a few theories.
Join us for a fascinating conversation that challenges the familiar story of Anglo-Saxon Britain and reveals instead a landscape of many peoples, many kingdoms, and many stories.
