Playmakers Open Day: Bharatanatyam Dance with Shreya Kallingal
Join us for an exciting in-person session exploring the beautiful world of Bharatanatyam with the incredible Shreya Kallingal. Whether you're a newbie or a dance enthusiast, come move, learn, and have fun in a welcoming space. Don't miss this chance to dive into an ancient art form.
Bharatanatyam is one of India’s 7 classical dance forms. The dance in its current form is characterized by its rhythmic precise footwork, musicality, strong lines, expressive hand gestures, and powerful facial expressions accompanied to traditional Carnatic music. Although Bharatanatyam’s origins can be traced to Courtesan and temple cultures, today it is widely accessed as form of cultural memory, creative expression, somatic practice, and even universal story-telling.
In this workshop, Shreya will present a short traditional Bharatanatyam performance and create a safe and welcoming space for participants to learn some fundamentals about the dance form and explore some of the expressive movement themselves. No prior dance experience required – just an open mind and heart.
Important Information
The session will be on at 11.30am and 1.30pm. Running time is approx. 1 hour.
Suitable for ages 7+. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
