ERO Presents: The SAS in wartime Essex

A history of the elite British Army regiment during their time based in Essex

Most people know the SAS as the elite British Army soldiers based in Hereford today. But what many don't realise is the dramatic story of their World War II formation - the ‘originals’ in North Africa—a small yet highly effective unit of around 60 men. While the recent TV series SAS Rogue Heroes has provided a dramatized insight into their operations until D-Day on June 6, 1944, a significant chapter has largely remained untold: the SAS's extensive presence in Essex from late 1944.

By this point, the SAS Brigade had grown to over 2,500 personnel. From their bases in Essex, they conducted their vital final ‘behind the lines’ operations in occupied Europe and Germany, playing a crucial role in the downfall of Nazi Germany.

Gordon Brown, Chair of the Earls Colne Heritage Museum, has researched original sources to delve into this intriguing period of recent history. He will share his findings in an illustrated talk, offering unique insight into both the SAS's operations and the men who operated from the heart of Essex during the final stages of World War Two.
