The Centre for Research in History, Heritage and Memory Studies is committed to generating world-leading research that engages with challenges at the core of today’s cultures and societies, promoting inclusive and interdisciplinary projects that encompass medieval to contemporary periods. We embrace and lead debates relating to social, economic, cultural and public history; poverty and welfare; identity; race; gender and sexuality; legacies of violence; heritage and memory. 2026 marks the fourth year of Nottingham Trent University's History and Policy seminar series organised by Professor Steven King.

<h3>Dr Richard Machin (NTU) – Social Security Policy: recent history and ongoing challenges*</h3>2026 marks the fourth annual iteration of Nottingham Trent University's History and Policy seminar series organised by Professor Steven King. In the aftermath of the recent controversial Budget and with debate on welfare reform continuing to dominate the news cycle, the seminar series will focus this year on the subject of welfare reform, looking at how, by taking a longer historical perspective to the topic, we may be able to offer new insights into the issue. This year we also intend to step back and look more broadly at other related policy issues, such as the current state of SEN education and disability employment.Seminars take place online from 1700-1830 on the days indicated. It is expected that papers will last for c.45 minutes, with questions thereafter.
