Introduction to Letterpress

Introduction to Letterpress

New North PressLondon, Greater London
Saturday, Apr 25 from 10 am to 5 pm GMT+1
Overview

Design and print using our 800+ wooden, metal and 3D-printed fonts

Our classes offer a hands-on introduction to letterpress and are an ideal opportunity for anyone who would like to acquire a practical knowledge of this craft at a beginners level.

Participants experience the entire process, from composition (hand-setting, spacing and locking-up type) to printing (inking and pulling the press). Access to our library of over 800 wood and metal fonts is open and everyone leaves with a printed example of their work.

Group size is set to a maximum of four people and we begin with an introduction to the workshop, browsing our huge pile of type specimen cards. Then we help each person to produce their own work independently. We don't prescibe what you print – it could be a comanding woodtype poster or a delicate metal type poem. Please come with ideas and we will help you realise them.

A 'printer's lunch' is provided – please let us know if you have any dietry requirements.

All materials are provided but please wear old clothes or bring an apron.

Please be aware that, although as of 2026 we have expanded our working area, our studio is a confined space and class participants are likely to be in close proximity to one and other, handling objects and touching shared surfaces.
