Therapy for apraxia of speech following stroke
Therapy for acquired apraxia of speech (AoS) often involves practice of isolated articulatory movements and combining them to form syllables. This is sometimes termed microstructural therapy. Other therapy options are available directed at larger chunks of speech (e.g. Melodic Intonation Therapy targeting whole utterances). The evidence base for AoS therapy, however, remains small which is unhelpful for clinicians in planning and implementing intervention. In this talk, I will outline intervention options for AoS and the evidence for their effectiveness. I will then describe a usage-based therapy study that was conducted at the University of Sheffield and published at DOI: 10.1161/STROKEAHA.115.011939

Rhythm, Voice and Speech: A Music Therapy Perspective on Apraxia of speech
Rhythm, Voice and Speech: A Music Therapy Perspective on Apraxia This talk explores how music therapy may support people with apraxia, with particular attention to speech, motor planning, rhythm and prosody. Drawing on clinical music therapy practice and insights from classical vocal training, it considers the ways in which melody, pulse, breath and vocal shaping can offer supportive pathways for communication when speech is effortful or inconsistent. The session is intended as an educational introduction for those interested in the relationship between music, voice and speech, and in understanding how creative therapeutic approaches may help people living with apraxia.
